Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef Feel free to swap with turkey or plant-based alternatives for a lighter option.
  • 4 medium potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced) Russet potatoes work best for their fluffy texture; sweet potatoes can be used for a twist.
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped) A sweet onion or shallots can be used for a milder flavor.
  • 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella) Sharp cheddar adds punch; mozzarella provides gooeyness.
  • 1/2 cup milk Consider heavy cream or almond milk for variations.
  • 2 tbsp butter (melted) Use for a creamy sauce.
  • to taste salt Season to taste.

  • In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
  • Spoon the beef-onion mixture generously on top, then follow with the rest of the potato slices.

  • Top with the shredded cheese.

  • Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
