Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb 1 lb (450 g) breakfast sausage (pork or turkey) Use pork for richness or turkey for a lighter option.
  • 1/4 cup 1/4 cup (30 g) all-purpose flour This thicken the gravy.
  • 2.5 cups 2 1/2 cups (600 ml) milk Whole or 2% milk can be used for creaminess.
  • 1/2 tsp 1/2 tsp salt Essential for flavor.
  • 1/4 tsp 1/4 tsp black pepper Simple seasoning.
  • 1/4 tsp 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional) Add for extra flavor.
  • 1/4 tsp 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional) For a spicy kick.
  • 2 cans 2 cans (~16 oz / 450 g) refrigerated biscuit dough Homemade biscuits can be used for a fresher taste.
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese For added flavor on top.
  • to taste Chopped fresh parsley or chives For garnishing.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until fully browned, breaking it into small crumbles. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage, stirring for 1–2 minutes.
  • Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and optional red pepper flakes.
  • Cut each biscuit into halves or quarters.
  • Spread half of the biscuit pieces in the bottom of the baking dish. Pour half of the gravy over the biscuits. Layer the remaining biscuit pieces on top and pour the remaining gravy over it. Sprinkle cheese on top, if using.
  • Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Let cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with parsley or chives before serving.

Notes

This casserole can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. It can also be frozen before baking for up to a month. Experiment with spices and add veggies for variation.
